Welcome to Nagle College

Nagle College was founded in 1965 by the Presentation Sisters and is named after the foundress of the order, Nano Nagle. The Presentation Sisters withdrew from the College in 1993 but their Charism is continued in the work of the subsequent Principals and staff.

As a Catholic community, the College cultivates in its students a sense of individual self- worth, an appreciation of their own giftedness and of others, and the understanding and acceptance of individual differences amongst people and cultures.

The College motto, “In Deed Not Word", encapsulates our aim of helping students become women who want to improve the world and who are prepared to work actively to achieve this goal.

As a community centred on Christ and inspired by the example of Nano Nagle, we recognise and promote the dignity of each human person through the values of:

The four houses of Nagle College were founded in 1996.  A fifth house, Lismore, was added in 2015.  They take their identity from the Presentation Sisters, the places in which they worked and resided.

BALLYGRIFFIN (Green) - The birthplace of Nano Nagle, foundress of the Presentation Sisters in Ireland.

CORAKI (Red) - An Aboriginal school founded by the Presentation Sisters of Lismore.

D'ARCY (Yellow) - Sister Stanislaus D'Arcy, first Superior General of the Presentation Sisters in Australia.

LISMORE (Purple) - The town where the Presentation Sisters from Lucan, Ireland established their first Australian convent and school.

LUCAN (Blue) - The town of the foundation of the Presentation Sisters.

General Information

School attendance plays a critical roles in enriching the lives of students in schools.  Every day of attendance contributes to improved student achievement and success at school.

College Hours

The College hours are from 8:45am to 3:00pm. Parents are asked not to make appointments (i.e. doctor, dentist, specialist) for your daughter during college hours.

Absences

If a student is absent from school, an SMS will be sent to their parent/carer informing them of the absence. The parent/carer is asked to respond to the SMS stating the reason for the absence. The College may ring to verify absences. Alternatively, the parent/carer may supply a written note on the return of the student to school. This note should be given to the student’s homeroom teacher. The note need only be brief and simply state the reason for the absence and the date or dates of absence.

Arriving Late

Students who arrive at the College after 8:45 am are required to present at the school office to sign in. They will be given a printout of their arrival to be shown to their homeroom or class teacher. If possible they should have a note explaining their lateness.

Leaving Early

Students requesting early dismissal need to have a note addressed to their homeroom teacher which states the time & reason for leaving early. Students must be signed out by a parent or carer from the College Office.

Extended Leave

The College does not condone holidays taken during term time. Where term time leave is unavoidable an Application for Extended Leave must be completed and submitted to the Principal (with all relevant documentation) at least two weeks in advance, with the exception of leave required for attendance at funerals, misadventure or unforeseen events, or serious illness of an immediate family member/s. The Application for Extended Leave is available from the College office.

The canteen is open Monday to Friday, before school (from 8:00 am), recess and lunch.

Special orders can be placed with the canteen supervisor, if required, and all canteen prices are GST inclusive.

Students are expected to arrive at school by 8:30 am and be prepared to commence classes at 8:45 am. The final bell for the day sounds at 3:00 pm.

Families are asked to assist the school in the interest of the students’ safety by ensuring that students do not attend or remain in the school grounds outside hours, unless they are waiting for buses in the supervised bus lines.

The school will not be responsible for supervising or caring for students outside the school premises unless the students are engaged in a school sponsored activity e.g. an excursion or a sporting event. The school will not be responsible for supervising or caring for students on their journey to and from school. In particular, the school will not be responsible for supervising students at bus stops either on their way to school or on their way home from school.  Each student’s journey to and from school shall be the responsibility of each student’s parent or carer.

Learning Preparation Guide

Learning preparation at home is a very important part of the learning process. It is hoped that the student's skills will be strengthened as well as promoting initiative and responsibility. Learning and preparation has two components. There are:

  • Homework
    Any activity which has been set by the teacher to be completed by a set date.

  • Study
    Any activity other than homework, which reinforces work done at school.
    As well as this students are actively encourage to read for 20 minutes each night.

Home Study Timetable

Importantly, habits are formed by doing things regularly. It is easier to establish habits if regular hours on regular days are set aside for learning preparation. If no homework has been set, then the time should be spent on study. The following times are recommended:

Years 7-9 1 to 1.5 hours, 4 nights per week
Years 9-10 1.5 to 2 hours, 5 nights per week
Years 11-12 2.5 to 3 hours, 5 nights per week, PLUS weekend study

The library at Nagle College is a dynamic and interdisciplinary learning commons that is designed to encourage critical thinking, effective research and enticing reading opportunities.

Study Skills

  • Tuesdays 3:15 – 4:00pm

At Study Skills students have the opportunity to access extra support from their teachers. It is designed to provide specific support for learning research skills and completing classwork, homework and assessments. Students can work independently or ask their teacher for help.

If students bring mobile phones to school they are to be switched off during lessons and in the students’ pockets.

  • The College takes no responsibility for mobile phones that are lost, stolen or damaged at school
  • If a mobile phone is used inappropriately at school a consequence will be given and parents will be contacted. Repeated misuse of a mobile phone will result in the withdrawal of the right to have the phone at school. If students are ill at school, they are to report to Student Services so that parents can be contacted. If a student needs to contact her parent for any other reason, she must seek permission from her teacher and go to Student Services immediately
  • Students are not to contact parents by use of mobile phone before advising a teacher or the office
  • Students are not permitted to loop headphones through their uniform or wear them whilst moving around the College or during lessons.

Class teachers will formally report to parents twice per school year. Midyear, an individual parent-teacher interview will be organised. Twice a year a written report will be provided for all students.

Close communication between parents and teachers is essential for the progress of your daughter. You are always welcome to contact us. The principal and the class teachers are very willing to discuss the progress of your child whenever you consider this advantageous. Simply contact the school in order to organise a mutually convenient interview time.

Because parents are the most vital educative influence in the lives of their children, it is most important that parents and teachers work together. Parent–Student-Teacher evenings are conducted during the year for each year group and it is expected that all parents/ caregivers attend.

In addition, Information Nights are held for parents and students at different times to discuss and explain the structure of the curriculum and to guide students in their choice of subjects and levels.

Parents or caregivers desiring an interview in addition to the above, are encouraged to do so through the Pastoral Co-ordinator and are requested to make an appointment by telephone on 02 8887 4501.

Parent forums are held on various topical issues throughout the year and are advertised in our newsletter, The Lantern.

In the interest of student safety, parking is not permitted within the College carpark between the hours of 7.30– 9.30am and 2.30–4.30pm. If you need to access the carpark due to an appointment or illness, please use the intercom system to allow entry.

Our Peer Support programme is designed to help incoming Year 7 students with the transition from primary school to high school, to encourage friendship among these students and their peers in Year 10, and to build a greater sense of community within the College.

The overall objectives of the programme are:

  • to develop friendships between students
  • to enhance self-awareness and self-esteem
  • to offer a safe environment which allows a sharing of feelings and ideas in a non- judgemental atmosphere
  • to offer support during a growth change period
  • to develop self-responsibility
  • to enhance relationships and develop trust with others
  • to foster closer involvement with the College
  • to develop leadership skills in older students
  • to enable new Year 7 students to integrate easily and feel comfortable in doing so

Peer Support Leaders are chosen towards the end of Year 9 after a selection process, and are trained by staff who have themselves undertaken training.

As Year 10s, these Peer Support Leaders meet regularly with their Peer Support Staff advisers throughout the programme, and there is close liaison with the Leader of Student Well-Being. There are two Year 10 Group Leaders to each group of 8 to 10, Year 7 students. They meet once a week during Term 1. The programme begins operating on the first day Year 7 girls enter the College and continues until the end of Term 1.

The ‘Spirit of Nano Cup’ was introduced at Nagle in 2008. Students have the opportunity to earn points for their house team when they perform acts that deserve recognition. Students are encouraged to participate in various college activities to support their houses. Students can also earn points by participation in the major school carnivals.

The points awarded through the merit system contribute to an overall team result for each of the houses across all year groups. The house awarded the most points for the year wins the ‘Spirit of Nano Cup’ and team members are treated to a special activity.

School fees are generally billed in instalments during Terms 1, 2 and 3. The fee is made up of three main parts:

  • Annual Diocesan Tuition Fees
    These are set by Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta and are the same for every school.
    There are significant sibling discounts for families with more than one child at one of our schools.
  • Diocesan Building Levy
    This is set by Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta and is the same for every school.
    There is only one Diocesan building levy per family.
  • School-Based Fees
    These are determined by the school according to our needs and are billable for each child. 
    These fees help cover costs of things like teaching resources, technology, excursions etc.

2021 Fees Payable

In order to support teachers in their professional development and to ensure our school offers the best possible learning experiences for our staff and students, six days a year are allocated for staff development.

On these days teachers will be involved in activities such as curriculum development, formation, student well-being, opportunities for parent/student interviews and feedback. Dates of these staff development days will be advised through the College newsletter and on the College calendar. You are asked to make other arrangements for the supervision of your child/ children on these days.

Student Leadership provides a forum for students to express opinions about school issues, to make suggestions for improvements or for events and to involve themselves in the running of the College. Leadership at Nagle takes our motto “In Deed Not Word” as its starting point.

The College has a Student Representative Council that undertakes to provide student leadership to the College. The structure of the SRC is as follows:

  • Year 12: College Captain, College Vice Captain, 6 SRC representatives
  • Year 11: 6 SRC representatives
  • Year 10: 4 SRC representatives
  • Year 9: 4 SRC representatives
  • Year 8: 2 SRC representatives
  • Year 7: 2 SRC representatives.

The Houses are represented by Year 12 House Captains and Vice House Captains and Year 11 Assistant House Leaders.
Homerooms are based on the five houses and homeroom captains will be elected in Years 7-10.
The Leader of Student Well-being supervises the SRC and House Leaders.

Pastoral Care at Nagle College underpins all facets of College life. Our Pastoral Care practices affirm that all members of the school community have the right to be treated with respect and dignity and to learn and work in a safe environment.

Nagle College does not condone corporal punishment at school and/or in any other context. All practices and process are underpinned by natural justice, procedural fairness and the right to a fair hearing. In addition, our practices aim to foster positive relationships among all members of the College community and to promote high standards of behaviour and personal responsibility.

All students of the College are expected to show respect at all times and display behaviour that reflects well on themselves, their families, the College and the wider community. The Pastoral Care structure at Nagle College utilises a variety of support networks to ensure that each student can achieve her best.

A key element in ensuring the well-being of all students at Nagle College is the Student Management Policy and Student Code of Behaviour that aims to improve student health and safety and promote PBS4L - Positive Behaviour Support for Learning.

PBS4L refers to a values based system of school wide processes and individualised instruction designed to maintain and foster positive behaviour. This process facilitates the development of quality learning environments in which all students feel safe, secure and can flourish as individuals.

At Nagle our PBS4L expectations are:

Student Counselling

Counselling is available to all students of the College. To make appointments, students can visit Student Services. Parents are welcome to phone or make an appointment to discuss any concerns they may have. At counselling students are given the opportunity to:

  • Talk about a range of issues such as study, exams, relationships, bullying, family conflict, feeling angry or worried etc.
  • Take the chance to talk with someone independent to the family
  • Learn how to solve problems and achieve goals
  • Find out how to help a friend or family member in trouble
  • Bring a friend if coming alone is too difficult.

The School Opal card gives eligible school students free or subsidised travel on public transport between home and school on trains, buses, ferries and light rail in the Opal network.

Students who live more than approximately 2km from the College, are eligible for a free OPAL Card for travel between home and school ONLY. To keep this card, their behaviour on public transport must be acceptable at all times.

  • College blazer - compulsory for winter and must be worn as the outer garment
  • College jumper or cardigan - worn under the blazer
  • Opaque navy or black stockings

  • A plain navy, white or black scarf may be worn

Sport Uniform

College Bag

Students must use the College school bag – handbags and shoulder bags are not permitted.

Commemorative Garment – Year 12

Year 12 students will only be allowed to wear their commemorative garment to school on Thursdays, at Sports Carnivals, Formation Day and other days negotiated by the Principal.


Personal Grooming

  • Hair styles should be appropriate to the College setting, e.g. extreme or multiple colours or cuts are not permitted. Hair longer than shoulder length must be tied back. A discreet ribbon, hair band or clip in dark blue white or black may be worn.
    Combs and clips should be single coloured – dark blue, white or black.
  • No jewellery is to be worn by students, except for one (1) pair of plain, simple sleepers or studs and worn in the ear lobe. No nail polish, artificial nails or make-up are to
    be worn by students. Students are strongly advised not to wear any jewellery of an expensive or sentimental nature.

Policies

What is bullying?

“Bullying is a repeated psychological or physical oppression of a less powerful person by a more powerful person or group of persons.” (Rigby 1996)

 At Nagle College: 

  • We want to base our relationships on the teaching of Jesus: “My commandment to you is to love one another”; 
  • We want a safe secure and welcoming place in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect; 
  • We want all, teachers, students and parents to deal with bullying, which may involve reporting it, whether they are victims or onlookers; 
  • We want to ensure that anyone can protest against bullying and get support from the College; 
  • That all forms of bullying including via the internet or mobile phones are never appropriate; 
  • We implement specific policies and procedures that are appropriate to the developmental stages of students; 
  • We provide specific educational programmes and resources.

You can create an environment free from bullying by:

  • Dealing with the conflicts openly, peacefully and respectfully; 
  • Accepting responsibility for your words and actions; 
  • Taking appropriate actions if you are being bullied or if you become aware that someone else is being bullied; 
  • Examining your behaviour and stopping any bullying you have been engaged in, even if you don’t think it is all that serious; 
  • Responding to victims of bullying in a supportive and caring way; 
  • Demanding that bullies stop their behaviour.

If you are being bullied

You can choose how to respond to the situation; whatever you decide to do, act promptly to prevent the problem getting worse.

Positive Strategies:

1. Try to handle it yourself in a non-argumentative fashion:

  • be assertive, look the person in the eye 
  • tell them they’re annoying you and you want it to stop 
  • use “I” statements such as “I don’t like your behaviour”.

2. Get some advice from a trusted adult: 

  • your teachers 
  • your parents 
  • the School Counsellor 
  • a member of the College Leadership Team 
  • senior student you can trust 
  • College Leaders 
  • Peer Support Leaders.

 3. Report the bullying to a teacher, Homeroom teacher, Year Co-ordinator, School Counsellor, Assistant Principal or Principal and keep reporting it until it stops. 

If you bully another student (s), the following will occur: 

  • you will be interviewed 
  • witnesses will be interviewed 
  • your parents/carers will be informed 
  • consequences will be given 
  • Remember, harassment is against the law. Police may be notified in serious or repetitive cases.

The technology at Nagle College is used to enhance student learning by providing students with the opportunity to inspire excellence through effective research, communication, and innovation. This access allows students to set a foundation for success by establishing a core understanding of the safe and appropriate use of technology both in school and at home.

Privilege
Access to technology is a privilege, not a right. Inappropriate use of technology can result in the access to technology being revoked and disciplinary action may be taken. The College teachers and staff may suspend, limit or revoke the access to technology at any time.

Filtering and Monitoring
Nagle College has the right to monitor, copy, review and document any usage of the College technology resources. The College teachers and staff have the authority to assess the appropriateness of technology use. Students who misuse these resources will be subject to discipline (including suspension or expulsion) and their privileges can be revoked. ICT staff have the ability to monitor individual internet usage (i.e. see how much you watch YouTube), however ICT staff cannot see any secure details, such as usernames, passwords or emails.

Security
Please use only assigned accounts, and never use or view passwords other than your own or share your password with others. Do not post or distribute any private information about yourself or others including (but not limited to) phone numbers, full names, personal photos, and other forms of identification.
If you believe you are not the only one who knows your login details, please contact the ICT department to get them changed.

Network Security / Server
The College’s Wireless Network is a secure network. Only users’ devices authorised and connected by Nagle ICT are to be connected to Nagle’s network to ensure the security of both our network, and the devices connected to it. Any device on the network that is not authorised will be removed. Consequences are in place for students who use our network inappropriately and/or continue to access the network without authorisation.

Notification
Please notify a teacher or administrator if you encounter any technological issues or notice damage to any of the technology at Nagle College. If you find another person’s use of technology questionable or offensive, please notify a teacher, administrator, or Year Coordinator immediately.

Code of Conduct
Please be respectful of the technology and of the community by ensuring that you:

  • use headphones when listening to audio and only upon teacher’s discretion
  • use appropriate language and graphics
  • use resources for appropriate educational purposes
  • chargers must be checked and tagged by a recognised electrician/electrical company to ensure the charger complies with Work Health and Safety regulations
  • only charge devices with teacher’s approval.

BYOD – Minimum Specifications
At Nagle College students are able to bring their own device from home. For this device to be connected to the College network it must meet the minimum requirements as advised on the College website.

It is the right of all members of the Nagle College community to experience a safe and supportive learning and teaching environment. Staff, students and parents/carers have a right to be treated with respect and enjoy an environment free from bullying (including cyberbullying), harassment, violence, discrimination or intimidation. Teachers also have the rights to be informed, within Privacy requirements, about matters relating to students that may impact on the teaching and learning for that student.

Students have a responsibility to contribute positively to the educational experience for themselves and other students, to participate fully in the school’s educational program, and to ensure that their behaviours demonstrate respect for themselves, their peers, their teachers and all other members of the school community.

Parents/carers have a responsibility to take an active interest in their child’s educational progress, model and reinforce positive behaviours and ensure their child’s regular attendance. They have a responsibility to support the school in maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment for all students and engage in regular and constructive communication with school staff regarding their child’s learning.

Teachers have a responsibility to demonstrate the standards set by NESSA. That is, to know how students learn and how to teach them effectively, know the content they teach, know their students, plan and assess for effective learning, create and maintain safe and challenging learning environments, and use a range of strategies to engage students in effective learning. Teachers also have a responsibility to fairly, reasonably and consistently implement all school policies.

All members have an obligation to ensure school property is appropriately used and maintained.

Discrimination, sexual and other forms of harassment, bullying, violence, aggression and threatening behaviour are unacceptable and will not be tolerated in this school.

Responsibilities

As principal and school leaders, we will:

  • Work collaboratively to create a school environment where respectful and safe conduct is expected of everyone. 
  • Behave in a manner consistent with the standards of our profession and meet core responsibilities to provide inclusive, safe and orderly environments
  • Plan, implement and monitor arrangements to ensure the care, safety, security and general wellbeing of all students in attendance at the school is protected
  • Identify and support students who are or may be at risk
  • Do our best to ensure every child achieves their personal and learning potential
  • Work with parents to understand their child’s needs and, where necessary, adapt the learning environment accordingly
  • Respond appropriately when inclusive, safe or orderly behaviour is not demonstrated and implement appropriate interventions and sanctions when required
  • Make known to parents the school’s communication and complaints procedures
  • Ask any person who is acting in an offensive or disorderly way to leave the school grounds.

As Teachers and all non-teaching staff, we will:

  • Model positive behaviour to students consistent with the standards of our profession
  • Proactively engage with parents about student outcomes
  • Work with parents to understand the needs of each student and, where necessary, adapt the learning environment accordingly
  • Work collaboratively with parents to improve learning and wellbeing outcomes for students with additional needs
  • Communicate with the principal and school leaders in the event we anticipate or face any tension or challenging behaviours from parents
  • Treat all members of the school community with respect.

As Parents and carers, we will:

  • Ensure our child attends school on time, every day the school is open for instruction
  • Model positive behaviour to our child
  • Take an interest in our child’s school and learning
  • Work with the school to achieve the best outcomes for our child
  • Communicate constructively with the school and use expected processes and protocols when raising concerns
  • Support school staff to maintain a safe learning environment for all students
  • Follow the school’s complaints processes if there are complaints
  • Treat all school leaders, staff, students, and other members of the school community with respect.

As Students, we will:

  • Model positive behaviour to other students
  • Comply with and model school values
  • Behave in a safe and responsible manner
  • Respect ourselves, other members of the school community and the school environment
  • Actively participate in school
  • Not disrupt the learning of others and make the most of our educational opportunities.

Level B

Teacher Intervention (Minor)

  • You are not demonstrating the expectations of REAL in all that you do
  • You have difficulties following instructions in the classroom
  • You have difficulties completing assigned work
  • You have difficulties respecting others or their property
  • You have difficulties with grooming or wearing the correct uniform.
  • Your Parent/Caregiver will be contacted.
  • You will receive a consequence set by the teacher. This could include but is not limited to:
    • Staying behind at the end of the class/ activity
    • Community Service at Lunch/Recess.

Level C

Co-ordinator Intervention (Major)

  • You are not demonstrating the expectations of REAL in all that you do
  • You< continue to have difficulties with one or more of the issues raised on Level B
  • You are not responding to the actions taken at Level B.
  • Your Parent/Caregiver will be asked to attend an interview with the relevant Co-ordinator
  • You will be monitored
  • You will be given a Community Service.

Level D

Leader of Teaching and Learning OR
Leader of Student Well-Being

  • You are not demonstrating the expectations of REAL in all that you do.
  • You have difficulties responding to the actions taken at Level C.
  • Your Parent/Caregiver will be asked to attend an interview with the Leader of Teaching and Learning and/or the Leader of Student Well-being.
  • You will continue to be monitored.
  • You will continue with after school detentions.

Level E

Assistant Principal

  • You are not demonstrating the expectations of REAL in all that you do.
  • You have difficulties responding to the actions taken at Level C or D.
  • You are involved in one of the following extreme behaviours:
    • Drugs/Smoking
    • Physical Violence
    • Weapons
    • Harassment/ Intimidation.
  • Your Parent/Caregiver will be asked to an interview with the Assistant Principal.
  • You may be withdrawn from class and or school.
  • You will continue with Community Services.
  • You will be >monitored by the Assistant Principal.

Level F

Principal Intervention

  • You are not demonstrating the expectations of REAL in all that you do.
  • You have difficulties responding to the actions taken at Level E.
  • Your Parent/Caregiver will be asked to attend an interview with the Principal
  • You may be withdrawn from class or school
  • You will be placed on an individual contract
  • You will continue with Community Services
  • You will be monitored by the Assistant Principal.
